Wembanyama MVP season or Spurs Western Conference Finals run: What's more likely?

ree

San Antonio has made a surprisingly impressive start to the season with a record of 4-0, largely thanks to their young superstar, Victor Wembanyama. Although the team is not at full strength, missing key players like De'Aaron Fox and Jeremy Sochan, who have yet to play this season, their early success in a highly competitive Western Conference is arguably a more significant story than Wembanyama's standout performance. With Wembanyama playing at an MVP level in just his third NBA season and the Spurs enjoying a hot start, they are quickly becoming must-see TV this season. Given this context, the question arises: Are the Spurs more likely to achieve their first MVP winner since Tim Duncan in 2003 or reach the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017?

The Thunder, Rockets, and Nuggets are often seen as the top contenders to emerge from the Western Conference. However, with Victor Wembanyama's impressive play and a supporting cast that shows great potential, the Spurs could be a team to keep an eye on if they can maintain their current performance throughout the season.

In addition to Wembanyama's impact on defense, the Spurs have demonstrated the capability to excel defensively as a team, allowing an NBA-low average of just 104.5 points per game. This strong defensive performance has not only helped them win games but also enabled them to dominate their opponents, as they lead the league with a point differential of +16.5.

While it’s still early in the season, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Spurs finish in the top four seeds in the West, potentially setting themselves up for a strong playoff run.

Wembanyama has looked like something we have never quite seen before in the history of the game through the first few games of the 2025 season. His unique skill set at his size has made him a nightly nightmare for every NBA team on both ends of the floor. At just 21 years old, he already looks like a top-five player in the NBA with a chance to win both an MVP and Defensive Player of the Year award (DPOY) this season. Wembanyama currently averages 31 points,13.8 rebounds while leading the league in blocked shots at a ridiculous 4.8 blocks per game. Unlike most players at his age, he appears to have no weaknesses in his game, which makes him a scary sight for the rest of the league. He consistently demonstrates why he is a generational talent, and the Spurs are well-positioned to be a contender for years to come.

Both San Antonio and Victor Wembanyama seem poised to make significant progress this season, as they are ahead of schedule in their performance. However, given the strong competition in the Western Conference, it may be difficult for them to make a deep playoff run. As for Wembanyama, I expect him to be a favorite for several major NBA awards, along with All-NBA First Team honors. Although he is still early in his career, he is already establishing himself as a candidate to be the best player of his generation.
