Luka Doncic's 2024-2025 season has been the most tumultuous of his career. After reaching the NBA Finals last year, he was traded to the Lakers, where he faced a disappointing early exit in the first round against the Timberwolves. Despite posting impressive offensive statistics, many of the same criticisms and concerns that followed him during his time with the Mavericks resurfaced with the Lakers. Luka undoubtedly has the talent to become an all-time great for the franchise, but to achieve that, he needs to win a championship. To increase his chances of success on the biggest stage, he may need to make adjustments to his conditioning.
The trade of Luka Dončić was one of the most surprising moves in NBA history, and it could become a decision the Mavericks regret if he wins a championship with the Lakers. However, the very reasons the Mavericks felt compelled to trade him may also hinder his chances of winning with the Lakers.
Against the Timberwolves, Luka had a 67.7% blow-by rate, which was the highest in a playoff series over the past 10 years. This allowed the Timberwolves to score at will in the paint or break down the defense to get open looks for three-pointers. The Timberwolves executed this strategy to perfection and quickly turned the series in their favor, winning the series in five games.
Next season will be crucial for Luka's career. How he approaches this offseason will determine whether he continues on the same path or has the opportunity to silence his critics. Improving his conditioning and making a greater effort defensively should be priorities for him. This will help both him and the Lakers in their quest to win the championship.
Head coach JJ Redick laid the foundation for next season by stressing the importance of players “getting into championship shape.” While he didn’t specify anyone, it was clear that his comments were aimed at Luka, who has a reputation for entering NBA seasons without adequate conditioning.
Luka is not the reason the Lakers failed to win a title. The team was aware of the gaps in their roster when they traded for him and knew improvements were necessary. However, for the Lakers to reach their full potential, they will need their best player to perform at his best on both ends of the floor to have a chance of making it out of the Western Conference.
With the number of young stars in the league, such as Edwards, Brunson, and Haliburton, making deep playoff runs, Luka should be motivated to return at his best and demonstrate why he is considered one of the best players in the world. Although the Mavericks may no longer have faith in his ability to lead them to a championship or to get into championship shape, this offseason presents a great opportunity for him to change that narrative.
